A Visual Introduction to Bucks Point Lace - Geraldine Stott

Publisher : Batsford Ltd; 1st edition (28 Nov. 1985)
ISBN-10 : 0713443715
ISBN-13 : 978-0713443714
A Visual Introduction to Bucks Point Lace by Geraldine Stott
When this book came out in 1985 it was considered a game changer as it used three colours in the diagrams;
  • Red for cloth stitch (CTC)
  • Blue for half stitch (CT)
  • Black for weaving and gimp threads)

In addition to using the colours in the diagrams, each of the patterns has clear instructions on how to work them.

Bucks Point lace traditionally was made in straight pieces so Geraldine not only trued up a number of traditional patterns for this book but also designed corners to go with these patterns.
Picture
What works well?
  • The book takes you through from the basics of Bucks Point step by step
  • The use of multi-coloured diagrams really help in learning the techniques
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is out of print, but readily available on online book sellers, eBay and through lace suppliers

The Technique of Bucks Point Lace - Pamela Nottingham

Publisher : Batsford Ltd; 1st edition (26 Nov. 1981)
ISBN-10 : 0713421754
ISBN-13 : 978-0713421750
The Technique of Bucks Point Lace by Pamela Nottingham
I'm going to start this book blog with a confession - I have a very big soft spot for Pamela Nottingham's books.

My first lace book was Bobbin Lace Making and then I went on to learn Torchon and Bedfordshire lace through her Technique of books.

This book should not be confused with Pam's other book on Bucks Point: Bucks Point Lacemaking.
Picture
What works well?
  • Pam Nottingham's writing style is very easy to read.  She is very descriptive.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book was one of the first of Pam's books to be published with colour diagrams where the use of blue and black were used to help define the diagrams.
  • This book is out of print, but frequently comes up on eBay.

Instructions in the Art of Making the Buckingham Pillow Lace - Georgina M Roberts and Alexandra F Stillwell

Publisher : Salex Publishing (April 16, 2007)
ISBN-10 : 0955469422
ISBN-13 : 978-0955469428
Instructions in the Art of Making the Buckingham Pillow Lace by Georgina M Roberts (1926) edited by Alexandra F Stillwell (2007)
Born in Tasmania, to missionary parents, Georgina Roberts came to the East Midlands in 1863 and became involved in the lace industry there.

A founding member of the Midland Lace Association, along with Catherine Channer and Ella Harrison, she was concerned with the plight of the lace workers, who at the time were some of the poorest in society.

Worried that the skills were declining, Georgina started to write a book to capture these skills and create a teaching book.  She failed to finish the last chapter and left it as a series of numbers of stitches.  Dieing just two years after the cover was printed.
Picture
Alex Stillwell became aware of this manuscript whilst researching and writing her her book on Geometrical Lace.

Using Georgina's own phrasing for the text, Alex trued up the patterns, created the missing diagrams, reworked the samples and commissioned the photograph so that this book could be rediscovered by all lacemakers.
What works well?
  • Filled with black and white diagrams and photos, the techniques shown are straight forward to follow.
  • This book takes you through a step by step process to learn Bucks Point.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?

Publisher : Salex Publishing (31 July 2013)
ISBN-10 : 0955469473
ISBN-13 : 978-0955469473
All about making - Floral Bucks Point Lace by Alexandra Stillwell
This book explains the differences between Floral Bucks and Geometric, which is covered in Alex's other book; Geometric Bucks Point.

Floral Bucks Point is characterised by it's inclusion of flowers and floral motifs and is probably the most recognisable of the Bucks Point variants.

Whilst Geometric Bucks is aimed at someone wanting to learn Bucks Point, this book is aimed more at the lacemaker who has a basic knowledge of Bucks Point.

Included in this book are sections on design and how to adapt lace pieces to create patterns
