The Small Friendly Spider Book - The Lace Guild

Publisher : A Lace Guild Publication.
ISBN : 978-1-901372-34-2
The Small Friendly Spider Book by The Lace Guild
Subtitled 17 bookmarks
With 17 bookmark patterns, this is an inspiring book for those who want to learn more about spiders in Torchon lace.

Illustrated throughout with colour photos and clear diagrams, this book is clearly aimed at the intermediate lacemaker but would be fun for the adventurous lacemaker who wants to push themselves.

Although not a sequel to this book, The Return of the Spider can be seen as a companion book.
Picture
What works well?
  • This book has a really useful section on how to start a bookmark and how to end one.  It offers three different starting methods, three different ends and three ways to create tassel endings as well.
  • The colour diagrams complement the photos of the finished bookmarks as a number of the samples have been made in multicoloured threads, making it difficult to differentiate the thread workings from the photos.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is currently available from both the Lace Guild and normal lace suppliers

Publisher : The Lace Guild (2008)
ISBN : 978 1 901372 24 3
An Introduction to Milanese Lace by Pat Read
Pat Read is one of the most recognisable names in Milanese lacemaking.

Her other books are now out of print and command exceptionally high prices so this booklet offers lacemakers an accessible to learn Pat's techniques.

The aim of this series of booklets from The Lace Guild is to offer beginner's guides that can be followed with our without teacher support
Picture
What works well?
  • As Milanese lace forms patterns through the movement of the bobbins rather than pins, the photographs in this book really add to the instructions on making these braids.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • The pattern shown on the front of the booklet is included as pattern 1.
  • This book is currently available from both The Lace Guild and lace suppliers
What do other people say?
This booklet has been reviewed by lace gumnuts
Available direct from The Lace Guild (you don’t have to be a member to purchase from them), or from many mail order lace equipment suppliers.
It contains all instructions for getting started, with 4 patterns each fully documented, plus a fifth pattern to experiment with yourself.  It includes clear diagram for the braids used in the patterns (8 different braids in all).
Like all the UK Lace Guild Booklets, a wonderful starter.
