There’s a hush that falls when I sit down to make lace.
Not the silence of emptiness, but the kind that comes when everything is exactly where it should be. It begins, as it always does, with the pattern. Pricking the design onto parchment or card is a ritual in itself. Each hole pierced becomes a gentle signal to the future me. The one who will follow this trail of dots with care and attention. There’s something quietly reverent about it. Like tracing the outline of a memory. ![]()
Then comes the winding. Bobbins wait patiently in a tray, lined up like dancers about to take the floor.
Each one is wound with thread, smooth and even, tension just right. It’s a slow and steady process. The sort that invites deep breaths and long thoughts. A quiet kind of preparation. ![]()
And then, the lace begins. Cross, twist, pin. Cross, twist. Again.
The bobbins pass between fingers in a familiar rhythm. Hands know what to do. Thoughts become quiet. There is no clock here, only the soft sound of wood against wood and the growing hush that the work creates around itself. What may look simple from a distance is a tapestry of movement. The lace grows slowly. Not in leaps, but in careful threads. Each movement builds on the last. There is no need to rush. There is only the doing. And in that doing, the world softens. ![]() The sound of the bobbins is a comfort in itself. A soft click here, a gentle knock there. Each type of wood sings its own tune. Cherry, boxwood, olive, sycamore. Bone bobbins link us back in time to historical lacemakers. Painted and decorated bobbins tell of our life events and the things we love. Some bobbins talk deeper, some lighter. Our hands learn their voices.
Making lace is not merely crafting. It is a form of stillness. A gentle rhythm. A quiet way of returning to yourself, thread by thread.
