SHIRLEY & HARRY GATES

Because Honiton lace is not as popular these days amongst lacemakers, it seems that the bobbins are often more easily obtainable on eBay.

This pair were another find.  The pail pink and white tulips are so lifelike.  They make a wonderful contrast to the deep red dog rose that is the other bobbin.

Shirley Gates is predominately known for her painted Honiton bobbins, based in Devon, many of her customers were Honiton lacemakers. However, she also painted eat midland bobbins and her husband Harry, turned beautifully spliced bobbins with their pointed base here the spangle would go.

Shirley’s painting style often had a distinctive white outline to flowers and other subjects.
