Schmetterlinge - Ulrike Lohr (Voelcker)

Publisher  : Self Published (1991)
Schmetterlinge by Ulrike Lohr (Voelcker)
This booklet contains 12 different butterfly designs including instructions and working diagrams.

As the book is in German, for the non German speaker then this would be for the adventurous beginner.

This makes a great companion volume to Ulrike's Point Ground; Butterfly and Moth.
Picture
What works well?
  • There are clear instructions (in German) on how to approach each pattern
  • It is well illustrated throughout with black and white photos and diagrams.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • Whilst this book is in German this should not prove an issue for those who do not speak German, check out my post on translations
  • This book is out of print, however it occasionally appears second hand.

Lace for Keeping - Kathy Corbett

Publisher  : Self Published, 1988
Lace for Keeping by Kathy Corbett
2 fans, 2 variants of 1 collar, a motif & a Jabot with 2 extra inserts.  Original Designs.

This booklet is well thought out and some of the patterns allow you to make variants within them.  In addition, there are few extra large, hand drawn diagrams.

As with Kathy's other booklets, published during the 1980s, whilst the instructions are given to many of the designs, a basic knowledge of Bucks Point and lacemaking is needed

What works well?
  • This book is produced as a photocopy, even so, it is filled with clear typewritten instructions and diagrams.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is out of print

Butterfly and Moth - Ulrike Lohr (Voelcker)

Publisher : Self Published
Butterfly and Moth by Ulrike Lohr (Voelcker)
Whilst each pattern is accompanied by clear working instructions and diagrams, this book assumes a good competence in Buck Point and point ground techniques.
What works well?
  • This book is sumptuously illustrated throughout with large colour photos of the butterflies and moths along with large working diagrams.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • Pipers Silks offer thread packs for these patterns
  • The large working diagrams come on a separate sheet - check this is included with the book when purchasing second hand.
  • This book is out of print, however a few lace suppliers do still have copies.
  • This book very rarely comes up on second hand sites or eBay.
This book has been reviewed on the lace gumnuts website
Soft cover, 250mmx200mm, stapled, 74 pages, illustrations in full glorious colour, one butterfly/moth per page at front and back, copious diagrams in black and white, and a sparate A2 sheet of working diagrams for each butterfly/moth.

Definitely not for the beginner or the faint hearted.  But superb and details diagrams and instructions for anyone patient enough to follow them.  These are actual replicas of real butterflies and moths, and colours chosen accordingly, from Pipers 90 floss silk used in varying multiples of strands.
This is another book I purchased from Kloppelshop in Germany for half price (14 Euros) plus postage at a recent sale they had, and I am delighted with it.

Bedfordshire Lace - Jean Leader

Publisher : The Crowood Press Ltd (22 Feb. 2021)
ISBN-10 : 1785008188
ISBN-13 : 978-1785008184
Bedfordshire Lace by Jean Leader
As always, Jean has produced clear, easy to read text that compliments the colour diagrams and photos.

Although designed to stand alone, this would make a fantastic follow up book to Jean's Introduction to Bedfordshire Lace, published by the Lace Guild.

The techniques are grouped at the beginning of the book so that they are easily referenced.

The 26 patterns take you from a very simple plaited circle, with picots through learning leaves and tallies to floral bucks.

Included in the book are the three butterflies on the front cover along with 3 collar patterns.

Picture
What works well?
  • Jean uses colour work at the start of the book to create interesting patterns but also to demonstrate the way that the stitches work through the trails.
  • Jean shows how to place large patterns onto block pillows in order to make them
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • A number of the patterns need to be enlarged; the percentage for doing this is clearly stated on the prickings.
  • This book is currently in print and available from online sellers and lace suppliers.

I'm the lace bee and these are my books

With currently over 400 books and about the same number of individual patterns, I have an enviable library.  So here are some of my books.

You can see all of the titles by opening up the archives or by clicking on the categories which I've used to group by authors, language and lace types.  Want to find a particular book?  Scroll to the top of the page, click on the magnifier glass and type in a title or author.

I am very grateful to the lace gumnuts of Australia for permission to quote and link their reviews to this site.
