50 Dutch Bobbin Lace Patterns : Withof & Duchess - Yvonne Scheele-Kerkhof

ASIN : B007YW7XJI
Publisher : Batsford, London; 1st edition (1 Jan. 2001)
ISBN-10 : 0713487003
ISBN-13 : 978-0713487008
50 Dutch Bobbin Lace Patterns : Withof & Duchess by Yvonne Scheele-Kerkhof
Closely related to Honiton lace, Withof and Duchess lace is a great next step.

Although this book was touted as a revised volume of Withof Lace, it is not and Withof Lace has 92 patterns within it.

The book is divided into two sections; techniques and 50 patterns.

With clear photographs and line drawings this book takes you through the key steps to learn this lace.  It also includes suggestions for each of the patterns on adaptation.

What works well?
  • This book includes a complete set of letters for anyone looking for an alphabet
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is currently out of print, but is often available on from online booksellers and occasionally on eBay
  • This book is available on kindle.  As with many kindle books, care should be taken when buying lace books on kindle that have patterns in them as there can be issues in printing them out to the correct size.

Birds and Animals in Honiton Lace - Saikoh Takano

Publisher : Batsford Ltd; 1st Edition (5 Sept. 1992)
ISBN-10 : 0713463163
ISBN-13 : 978-0713463163
Birds and Animals in Honiton Lace by Saikoh Takano
With clear black and white photography throughout showing both the wrong and right side of the lace, this book is easy to follow for someone who already understands the basics of Honiton.

Simple working diagrams are also included.

For someone interested in learning Honiton then I would recommend the Lace Guild's An Honiton: Basic Technical Instruction Book or Suzanne Thompson's An Introduction to Honiton Lace as a starting point.
Picture
What works well?
  • For lacemakers, the bee is a common symbol for industry.  This book has a Honiton pattern for a bee.
  • The black and white and colour photos of the braids are exceptionally well taken so that they boost the understanding of the patterns included.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is currently out of print, but is often available on from online booksellers and occasionally on eBay

ISBN-10 : 2350321371
ISBN-13 : 978-2350321370
Le point de Paris by Martine Piveteau
This book is in French, English and Italian.

Point de Paris has a very distinctive ground, which English lacemakers will recognise as Kat stitch.
Picture
What works well?
  • The use of multi-coloured diagrams really help in learning the techniques
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is still in print and available from online book sellers and lace suppliers.

100 Traditional Bobbin Lace Patterns - Geraldine Stott & Bridget Cook

Publisher : Batsford Ltd (29 Sept. 1982)
ISBN-10 : 0713439262
ISBN-13 : 978-0713439267
100 Traditional Bobbin Lace Patterns by Geraldine Stott & Bridget Cook
In the early 1980s, Bridget Cook and Geraldine Stott published a number of books that changed how we looked at lace pattern books.  They introduced three colours in the diagrams;
  • Red for cloth stitch (CTC)
  • Blue for half stitch (CT)
  • Black for weaving and gimp threads)
In addition to using the colours in the diagrams, each of the patterns has clear instructions on how to work them.

I would say that this is more aimed at the adventurous beginner who has mastered the basic stitches and is confident in reading a pattern.

I would probably recommend Geraldine Stott's Visual Introduction to Bucks Point as more of a beginners' book to learn from.

Anything that we need to take into consideration?

Russian Lace Patterns - Anna Korableva & Bridget M Cook

Publisher : Batsford Ltd (5 July 1996)
ISBN-10 : 0713467924
ISBN-13 : 978-0713467925
Russian Lace Patterns by Anna Korableva & Bridget M Cook
This one of the holy grails of lace books and is extremely difficult to find at a reasonable price.

This book contains a number of outstanding pictorial pieces designed by Ann Korableva including her rocking horse along with other patterns such as the lacemakers.

The four pieces, shown on the front cover, are in the book.
Picture
What works well?
  • The black and white photos are often far bigger than the actual lace patterns so these compliment the prickings adding visual information to the patterns.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This is a book of patterns and a knowledge of Russian and / or tape lace is assumed.
  • This book is out of print.  It is very rare and commands exceptionally high prices when available second hand

Building Torchon Lace Patterns -  Bridget M Cook

Publisher : Batsford Ltd; 1st Edition (1992)
ISBN : 9780713486231
Building Torchon Lace Patterns by Bridget M Cook
One of the first multilingual books on lacemaking published in the UK.
I originally bought this book thinking it would teach design like Jane Atkinson's Pattern Design for Torchon Lace however this book focuses more on adapting the given patterns using suggestions in the book
What works well?
  • The diagrams are full colour and well drawn
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is out of print, but frequently comes up on online sellers and eBay.

A Celebration of Bedfordshire Lace - The Thomas Lester Collection

Publisher : Cecil Higgins Art Gallery & Museum (23 July 2002)
ISBN-10 : 0951265733
ISBN-13 : 978-0951265734
A Celebration of Bedfordshire Lace - The Thomas Lester Collection
In 2002 the Higgins put on a display of their collection of Thomas Lester lace, which had been bequeathed to them by Amy Lester, Thomas Lester's granddaughter, in 1947.
This book is the catalogue of that collection
Picture
What works well?
  • The high quality black and white photos are complimented by both the descriptions of the lace and the intertwining story of Thomas Lester and his lace.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book contains no prickings.
  • This book is out of print, however the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery did have a few copies still in stock, the last time I visited.
