Publisher  : Self Published (1991)
Schmetterlinge by Ulrike Lohr (Voelcker)
This booklet contains 12 different butterfly designs including instructions and working diagrams.

As the book is in German, for the non German speaker then this would be for the adventurous beginner.

This makes a great companion volume to Ulrike's Point Ground; Butterfly and Moth.
Picture
What works well?
  • There are clear instructions (in German) on how to approach each pattern
  • It is well illustrated throughout with black and white photos and diagrams.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • Whilst this book is in German this should not prove an issue for those who do not speak German, check out my post on translations
  • This book is out of print, however it occasionally appears second hand.

30 Years of Lace Design
A Pattern Book to celebrate The Lace Guild's 30th Anniversary
Issued to coincide with the Lace Guild's 30th Anniversary, the Guild looked through 120 issues of 'Lace' and chose a pattern relevant to that year.

Chosen to showcase many different varieties of lace, many of the patterns were only ever published in Lace.

Examples of adverts are also reproduced to show how suppliers had interacted with lacemakers over the years.

Patterns represent some of our best known designers, along with others who were lacemakers sharing one of the free patterns that they had designed.
What works well?
  • Filled with black and white photos along with patterns, some diagrams and some instructions / suggestions for working
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is out of print

Hausdrachen by Ulrike Lohr
From chameleon to dragons via the Chinese word for Dragon, this is a dragon lover's idea of heaven.

Not for the faint hearted, these are intermediate and above level patterns which have notes supplied but not full instructions.
What works well?
  • Each pattern is on a folded A2 sheet of paper with notes on the threads, working diagram and pricking.
  • There are clear working notes in both English & German
Picture
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • There should be twenty (20) pattern sheets in the box.  Check this is correct if buying second hand.
  • This set is out of print but available through specialist lace book suppliers

Rosaline Perlée - Jan Geelen

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Uitgeverij Terra Lannoo; 1st edition (1 Jan. 1990)
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 906255413X
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-9062554133
Rosaline Perlée by Jan Geelen
This is one of only two mainstream books on Rosaline that were published during the 1990s.

Rosaline lace has a characteristic embroidered 'peal' which, when joined, create the 'Rosaline-Perlée'

Interest in this lace was sparked by more globally by Ghislaine Eemans-Moore's multilingual book Rosaline Lace in 1996.
Picture
What works well?
  • The step by step black and white line drawings work well to guide the lacemaker through the steps
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • Similar techniques are used in Honiton and Duchess so this book would make a good 'next move' for anyone familiar with those laces.
  • Although this book is in Dutch, translating it should not be an issue - read my post on translations
  • This book is currently out of print and only occasionally appears as a second hand book.

I'm the lace bee and these are my books

With currently over 400 books and about the same number of individual patterns, I have an enviable library.  So here are some of my books.

You can see all of the titles by opening up the archives or by clicking on the categories which I've used to group by authors, language and lace types.  Want to find a particular book?  Scroll to the top of the page, click on the magnifier glass and type in a title or author.

I am very grateful to the lace gumnuts of Australia for permission to quote and link their reviews to this site.
