Torchon lace for today by Jennifer Fisher
This book was published in the early1980s as an instruction book to take the lacemaker from creating their first pillow to making lace.

Illustrated throughout with black and white line drawings and photos, it also has a few colour plates to illustrate the patterns.
What works well?
  • There are some good, unique patterns in this book included a cloth edging, Poinsettia, and a shawl.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • The patterns in the book are marked on graph paper so care is needed to be taken when photocopying them.
  • This book is out of print, but regularly appears second hand.

Kloppelmuster fur schals und tischlaufer / Lace patterns for scarves and table runners by Brigitte Bellon
The scarves and table runners in this booklet are a great inspiration for any lacemaker thinking of branching out into scarf making.

The patterns are relatively straightforward Torchon which should be accessible to the confident beginner due to the text being in German.

What works well?
  • The patterns come with colour photos of the finished lace along with guides as to threads, number of bobbins and finished size.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • The booklet is supplied with 2 pattern sheets.  When buying second hand, check that these are included
  • Whilst this book is in German this should not prove an issue for those who do not speak German, check out my post on translations
  • This book is out of print

When Jacqui Barber first published this book, and its companion Tradition into Creation, they were groundbreaking in their use of colour and texture in large scale lacemaking.

The techniques here are bobbin lace, just on a large scale.

  • This book encourages the adventurous lacemaker to think big and rummage in their yarn stash to create some amazing large scale, wearable lace.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • The prickings supplied with the book need to be enlarged on a photocopier in order to create the full sized pattern.
  • This book has been out of print for some years, however back in print and available for selected lace suppliers

I'm the lace bee and these are my books

With currently over 400 books and about the same number of individual patterns, I have an enviable library.  So here are some of my books.

You can see all of the titles by opening up the archives or by clicking on the categories which I've used to group by authors, language and lace types.  Want to find a particular book?  Scroll to the top of the page, click on the magnifier glass and type in a title or author.

I am very grateful to the lace gumnuts of Australia for permission to quote and link their reviews to this site.
