Torchon Patterns from the Winslow Sample Book

ISBN  : 19013742146
Torchon Patterns from the Winslow Sample Book

In 1998, the Lace Guild acquired a large sample book that was used to showcase the lace offered for sale by the Winslow Lace Industry, in Buckinghamshire.

This book is a small sample of patterns from that book, just 10, which are either directly transcribed or adapted.

As these are prickings and photos only, with no instructions, this would be perfect for the adventurous beginner or intermediate lacemaker who is familiar with Torchon lace.

What works well?
  • Each design contains a black and white photo of the finished lace, pricking, number of pairs and suggested thread.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is out of print

30 Years of Lace Design
A Pattern Book to celebrate The Lace Guild's 30th Anniversary
Issued to coincide with the Lace Guild's 30th Anniversary, the Guild looked through 120 issues of 'Lace' and chose a pattern relevant to that year.

Chosen to showcase many different varieties of lace, many of the patterns were only ever published in Lace.

Examples of adverts are also reproduced to show how suppliers had interacted with lacemakers over the years.

Patterns represent some of our best known designers, along with others who were lacemakers sharing one of the free patterns that they had designed.
What works well?
  • Filled with black and white photos along with patterns, some diagrams and some instructions / suggestions for working
Anything that we need to take into consideration?

Art, Trade or Mystery, Lace and Lacemaking in Northamptonshire by Pat Rowley
There are three counties that are at the heart of the East Midlands lacemaking industry.  Two have lace styles named after them; Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire.  The third sometimes gets forgotten and is Northamptonshire.

Pat Rowley wrote this book to coincide with the exhibition held in 1999 of the same name.  In it, she looks at the influential people involved in the industry, such as the dealers and the Midland's Lace Association and it's effect on the lacemakers who lived there.

What works well?
  • Whilst not a pattern book, there are a few redrafted Northamptonshire patterns included in the book
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is out of print but appears occasionally in second hand sales.

Church Lace Today - Margaret N Jeans

Publisher : The Lace Guild
Church Lace Today by Margaret N Jeans
15 New Designs using Torchon, Beds, Bucks & Honiton Techniques
Margaret has annotated the patterns with where they were finally installed.

Because this book has been written by someone involved in the production of lace for churches, the patterns work well for those purposes.
What works well?
  • There are very clear illustrations and diagrams.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • The threads suggested in this book may no longer be available.  Threads for lace is an invaluable resource for finding alternative threads.
  • This book is currently available from both The Lace Guild and lace suppliers.  Second hand copies also appear from time to time.

Publisher : The Lace Guild
ISBN : 1901372375
The Return of the Spider by The Lace Guild
Whilst not strictly a follow up volume to The Small Friendly Spider, this is definitely a companion book.

Taking the spider theme further, it includes not just bobbin lace patterns, but also a knitting pattern, needle-lace spider and some fun to be had with pipe cleaners.
What works well?
  • The booklet is illustrated throughout with colour photos
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • A number of the prickings for the bobbin lace patterns are included on a separate sheet - do check that this is included with the book when purchasing
  • This book is currently available from both The Lace Guild and lace suppliers

I'm the lace bee and these are my books

With currently over 400 books and about the same number of individual patterns, I have an enviable library.  So here are some of my books.

You can see all of the titles by opening up the archives or by clicking on the categories which I've used to group by authors, language and lace types.  Want to find a particular book?  Scroll to the top of the page, click on the magnifier glass and type in a title or author.

I am very grateful to the lace gumnuts of Australia for permission to quote and link their reviews to this site.
