Decorative Braids for Milanese Lace - Patricia Read, Lucy Kincaid & Jane Read

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Jane Read (11 Oct. 2021)
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1802271473
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1802271478
Decorative Braids for Milanese Lace by Patricia Read, Lucy Kincaid & Jane Read
Pat Read & Lucy Kincaid's Milanese Lace, An Introduction and New Braids and Designs in Milanese Lace have become two of the most indispensable books on Milanese Lace.

As the back cover of this book says, these books have both been out of print for a number of years.  So, Jane, Pat's daughter, has brought together the braids from these two books, along with 40 new braids to produce what will soon be seen as the ultimate Milanese braid reference book.

It needs to be noted that this is not a reprint of the two earlier books and as such, only contains the braids.  It does not contain any patterns.

As this book has been designed to be an Amazon Print on Demand, it is one of the first lace books to be produced this way.  This means that it should be available for a number of years to come and do away with print runs and going out of print.
What works well?
  • The black and white photos and diagrams clearly show the braid construction and coupled with the clear wording, this makes it easy to follow and recreate these braids.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is published as Amazon print on demand.  This means that the book will always be cheaper to buy from Amazon so care should be taken when purchasing from different sources.
  • This book is available on kindle.  Due to the nature of how this book is produced, the kindle version looks exceptionally good and is a good alternative for those who do not want a hard copy of the book.

ISBN-10 : 0713489162

50 New Milanese Lace Patterns by Patricia Read
This is a book of fantastic patterns to expand the repertoire of Milanese Lace.

This is not a technique book and for anyone looking to start learning Milanese Lace I would recommend that you start your Milanese lace journey by using Pat Read's An Introduction to Milanese Lace Book which is published by the Lace Guild.

What works well?
  • The black and white and colour photos of the braids are exceptionally well taken so that they boost the understanding of the patterns included.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book is currently out of print, but is often available on from online booksellers and occasionally on eBay
  • This book is available on kindle.  As with many kindle books, care should be taken when buying lace books on kindle that have patterns in them as there can be issues in printing them out to the correct size.

New Braids and Designs in Milanese Lace - Pat Read & Lucy Kincaid

Publisher : Batsford (12 Nov. 2014)
ISBN-10 : 0713471921
ISBN-13 : 978-0713471922
New Braids and Designs in Milanese Lace by Pat Read & Lucy Kincaid
The first third of this book covers braid designs which are explained clearly in the book with clear instructions.

There is a section in the book dedicated to colour which shows how colour works well with Milanese Lace.

The 'S for Serpent' patten on the front cover is included in the book

The book assumes that you know the basics of Milanese Lace so this is aimed at the adventurous beginner or intermediate lacemaker.  A good follow on to Pat Read's  An Introduction to Milanese Lace Book published by the Lace Guild.

An Introduction to Milanese Lace - Pat Read

Publisher : The Lace Guild (2008)
ISBN : 978 1 901372 24 3
An Introduction to Milanese Lace by Pat Read
Pat Read is one of the most recognisable names in Milanese lacemaking.

Her other books are now out of print and command exceptionally high prices so this booklet offers lacemakers an accessible to learn Pat's techniques.

The aim of this series of booklets from The Lace Guild is to offer beginner's guides that can be followed with our without teacher support
Picture
What works well?
  • As Milanese lace forms patterns through the movement of the bobbins rather than pins, the photographs in this book really add to the instructions on making these braids.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • The pattern shown on the front of the booklet is included as pattern 1.
  • This book is currently available from both The Lace Guild and lace suppliers
What do other people say?
This booklet has been reviewed by lace gumnuts
Available direct from The Lace Guild (you don’t have to be a member to purchase from them), or from many mail order lace equipment suppliers.
It contains all instructions for getting started, with 4 patterns each fully documented, plus a fifth pattern to experiment with yourself.  It includes clear diagram for the braids used in the patterns (8 different braids in all).
Like all the UK Lace Guild Booklets, a wonderful starter.

I'm the lace bee and these are my books

With currently over 400 books and about the same number of individual patterns, I have an enviable library.  So here are some of my books.

You can see all of the titles by opening up the archives or by clicking on the categories which I've used to group by authors, language and lace types.  Want to find a particular book?  Scroll to the top of the page, click on the magnifier glass and type in a title or author.

I am very grateful to the lace gumnuts of Australia for permission to quote and link their reviews to this site.
