A Pattern Book to celebrate The Lace Guild's 30th Anniversary
Issued to coincide with the Lace Guild's 30th Anniversary, the Guild looked through 120 issues of 'Lace' and chose a pattern relevant to that year.

Chosen to showcase many different varieties of lace, many of the patterns were only ever published in Lace.

Examples of adverts are also reproduced to show how suppliers had interacted with lacemakers over the years.

Patterns represent some of our best known designers, along with others who were lacemakers sharing one of the free patterns that they had designed.

Art, Trade or Mystery, Lace and Lacemaking in Northamptonshire by Pat Rowley
There are three counties that are at the heart of the East Midlands lacemaking industry. Two have lace styles named after them; Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire. The third sometimes gets forgotten and is Northamptonshire.

Pat Rowley wrote this book to coincide with the exhibition held in 1999 of the same name. In it, she looks at the influential people involved in the industry, such as the dealers and the Midland's Lace Association and it's effect on the lacemakers who lived there.

What works well?

Whilst not a pattern book, there are a few redrafted Northamptonshire patterns included in the book

Preserved in the Library of Congress are 22 black silk bobbin lace samples, deep amongst the paper of Alexander Hamilton. What makes these pieces so unique is that their provenance is not just known but documented. We know where and when they were made and they offer a unique insight into the lives of the women lacemakers of that period.

This book is both a history of Ipswich lace and a source of patterns. The photos in the historical section work well to illustrate and add depth to the history.

The Lace Samples from Ipswich, Massachusetts, 1789-1790 by Karen H Thompson
Subtitled History, Patterns, and Working Diagrams for 22 Lace Samples Preserved at the Library of Congress

Karen H Tompson is a name most US lacemakers and many world-wide know as a great teacher. This book is a wonderful testament to her knowledge and ability to recreate these 22 pieces of late 18th century American lace and save them for future generations.

What works well?

For each design, Karen includes a photo of the original piece, the worked reproduction, a colour working diagram and the pricking.
