The Torchon Lace Workbook by Bridget M Cook
This book by Bridget M Cook takes you through the basics of Torchon Lace building up to making one of the holy grails of lacemaking ... a table cloth.
What works well?
  • When this book came out it set a standard for instructional books as it was one of the first books published with colour diagrams which Bridget Cook championed.
Anything that we need to take into consideration?
  • This book has a wonderful modular table cloth in it which is a great project to work towards
  • The inital print of this book is out of print, but frequently comes up on eBay.  It has also been reprinted and is available on Amazon

First off: thank you so much for your wonderful blog and site, it is an exhaustive source of information, I always check it out before any purchase!

As a beginner, I do think this is a wonderful book. Just one caveat, there are a couple of mistakes here and there: some pictures have been printed the other way around, so that e.g. a coloured pair will run right to left instead of left to right, thus not matching the text (see for instance Exercise 4), and the text in the Roseground exercise is also incorrect I think, while in Exercise 6 the pictures describing how to cross the bobbins to "lock" the gimp are also swapped (so that the description for the movement from left to right refers to the figure that shows the movement from right to left).

Even so, the large diagrams are so clear that if I could figure it out, so will everyone else! For my taste I think this books strikes the perfect balance between thoroughness and getting you going. I did get my copy second hand from a UK retailer.

I'm the lace bee and these are my books

With currently over 400 books and about the same number of individual patterns, I have an enviable library.  So here are some of my books.

You can see all of the titles by opening up the archives or by clicking on the categories which I've used to group by authors, language and lace types.  Want to find a particular book?  Scroll to the top of the page, click on the magnifier glass and type in a title or author.

I am very grateful to the lace gumnuts of Australia for permission to quote and link their reviews to this site.
